On a day like this Portland is a tear-shaped gemstone set in azure and flanked by glorious coast: to the East a stretch of high chalk cliffs, Durdle Door, then Lulworth, and to the West the long sweep of Chesil Beach.
It is a good opportunity for Freya to show how sport climbing is done at The Bower, a secluded shelf reached through an up-and-down notch from The Cuttings. Here you find a line of short routes ideal for honing skills.
Along from where I am belaying, the cliff drops down for a longer line which provides a more sustained climb.
Anyway, once the rope is threaded through, she can make her way down. A job well done.
And here is your view behind. It could be Greece. But if it was you wouldn't be able to indulge afterwards in crab with sweet potato fries at Billy Winters on the causeway. Sometimes it is better to stay at home.
