Long Scar

Updated: Apr 13, 2020

Look at this for a late February day in the Lake District by Pike of Blisco and nearly 600m up. James and I are heading for Long Scar, hoping for some user-friendly, short routes for a pair of rusty climbers on a winter's day.

I nip up a moderate line called Old Holborn and here is James coming along behind. Below is the controversial bit: a great big boulder employed as a hefty anchor at the top. Is it safe? Will it topple? Well, it doesn't.

So relying on the trusty boulder, we ascend the very easy-seeming VD named Rizla Rib.

James seems in no hurry here. But we have the whole of Sunday, except for the five hour drive back south, of course.

We always seem to be looking for a climb in late winter in the Lakes, after our annual hiking meet-up with the big fellowship, so the options are a bit limited unless you are bold. We have had some fun at Shepherd's Crag but this area is worth a return visit.
